Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is that students are able to comprehend plant breeding in the ways of plant production and productivity, and to have necessary knowledge to apply different breeding methods of genetically improving and developing new cultivars (varieties) and species.

Course Content

Evolution of domesticated cultivars, center of origin, variation sources, plant introductions, local cultivars, mechanisms governing cross-fertilisation, fertility and incompatibility, importance of apomixis in horticultural crops, qualitative and quantitative characteristics and their iinheritance, breeding techniques in self- and cross-fertlisation plants, sterility and hybrid cultivar breeding, pure-line selecton and development of F1 hybrid
