Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to help the students to recognize ornamental plants and cut flower species, comprehend the latest technological developments, to learn the propagation methods, to understand the basics of growing and give the ability to design realize, to to have ability to solve the problems in growing and propagation, and to make them understand the importance of quality, marketing, storing and postharvest storage of ornamentals.

Course Content

Definition of ornamental plants and cut flowers, classification, the situation of cut flower production in the world and Turkiye, required ecological conditions and technological inputs for cut flower growing, carnation, chrysanthemum, gerbera, rose, lilium etc.growing, postharvest of cut flower species, processing of products, marketing, definition of indoor ornamental plants, classification, rules of pot plant (indoor) desing.

Learning Outcomes
1.To be able to identify and define ornamental plants and cut flowers, and classify them
2.To able to comprehend the status of the cut flower industry in Turkey and to set appropriate targets for detecting the demands of the sector to improve
3.To be able to comprehend the ecological requirements of cut flowers and to recognize the ecological factors affecting the cultivation of cut flowers
4.To be able to identify the cut flower species and to comprehend and apply the propagation methods of these species
5.To be able to comprehend and use modern technologies in propagation of cut flower species
6.To be able to detect the problems that are faced in the cultivation of ornamental plants and cut flowers, and gain the ability to create a solution
