Objectives of the Course

The purpose of this course is to address the knowledge gap regarding sustainable field information technologies at the undergraduate education level and to raise students' awareness in this field. No prior knowledge beyond basic computer and internet use is required to follow the course. Without going into excessive detail, the aim is to draw students' attention to information technologies that are now frequently used in modern agriculture, to give them an informed perspective on these technologies that they will likely encounter after graduation, and to develop their ability to work collaboratively with other engineering disciplines in building systems that enable the development of new technologies.

Course Content

The course first introduces the hardware and software structure of computers, which are the fundamental tools of information technologies, along with programming logic and commonly used programs; it then covers the internet, networking concepts, data and databases, as well as mapping and global positioning systems. Following this, field hardware such as mini/micro computers used in the field, sensor technologies, the Internet of Things, and drones are addressed; the use of precision agriculture applications, early warning systems, and artificial intelligence technologies in plant protection for pest/disease monitoring, evaluation, counting, and decision-making in control is conveyed through examples. All these topics are interrelated and explained in terms of how they are and can be used, without going into excessive technical detail, and are supported by two separate applications, one in the classroom and one in the field.
