Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to give students a better understanding of animal behavior; behavioral characteristics of farm animals and factors affecting those characteristics; introduction to animal welfare science and welfare measuring criteria; as regard to improve animal welfare and productivity.

Course Content

Introduction to animal behavior (Ethology); the importance of animal behavior in management practices of animal production; physiological analyses of behavior; genetics, physical, and social effects on animal behavior; introduction to animal welfare; perception of welfare; criteria which are used in the assessment of welfare; correlations among welfare, stress, and behavior; abnormal behaviors;

The origins of behaviour; the concepts of reflex, instinct, motivation, fear, learning, experience and stress

Introduction to physiology of behavior; Excitations involving behaviour
Week 4 - Theoretical
Hormones and Behaviours
Week 5 - Theoretical
Introduction to the animal welfare science, components of welfare
Week 6 - Theoretical
Criteria which are used in the assessment of welfare

Discussion on the effects of some of routine management practices on welfare of animals in production stages

Legal regulations related to animal rights and animal welfare.
