Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to enable landscape architecture students to grasp inclusive and universal design principles for people with disabilities and various user groups; to introduce national and international legal regulations and standards related to accessible landscape design; to convey the methods and techniques applicable in barrier-free outdoor space design; to develop the ability to evaluate landscape design from different perspectives and contribute to accessibility and inclusive use principles in design assessment. Within this framework, students are expected to gain professional awareness by considering different user characteristics and needs, and to effectively apply this knowledge in design processes.

Course Content

The course covers the concept of disability and classification of disability; universal design, design for all, and inclusive design approaches are examined comparatively. Legal regulations and standards related to accessibility in Turkey and internationally are provided. Barrier-free park, square, road, playground, and urban open space design principles within the scope of landscape architecture; accessible furniture and furniture selection; and wayfinding systems are discussed with applied examples. Students consolidate their design skills by presenting a project developed throughout the semester. Assessment is based on written exams, class participation/performance, and assignments. In-semester evaluation consists of participation/performance, assignments, and midterm exam totalling 40%. End-of-semester evaluation is based on the final exam (60%).
