The aim of this course is to introduce the concept of urban aesthetics through theoretical and practical perspectives and to develop students’ ability to evaluate the aesthetic qualities of urban spaces, analyse the relationships among urban form, skyline, infrastructure and design, and interpret contemporary urban design approaches from an aesthetic perspective.
The course covers the fundamental concepts, historical development and current approaches to urban aesthetics. Topics include the aesthetic evaluation of urban spaces, the relationship between form and function, the aesthetic dimension of urban infrastructure, the relationship between urban development conditions and aesthetics, the effects of urban design practices on urban aesthetics, and contemporary examples of urban design. Case studies from different cities are examined and discussed through student presentations.
