Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to enable students to evaluate the concepts of art, space, aesthetics and cultural landscape in relation to the discipline of Landscape Architecture. Within the scope of the course, students are expected to understand the basic concepts of art, the aesthetic and cultural meanings of space, the relationship between Landscape Architecture and art, and the contribution of art in outdoor spaces to the design process. The course also aims to enable students to relate artistic and aesthetic perspectives to spatial quality, user perception, cultural context and the character of open spaces in landscape design.

Course Content

This course covers the concepts of art and space, the basic principles of art, the concepts of aesthetics and beauty, the relationship between art and craft, the perceptual, cultural and aesthetic dimensions of space, the relationship between Landscape Architecture and art, and art practices in outdoor spaces. Within the scope of the course, the historical development of art, the relationship between different branches of art and open and green spaces, art in public space, aesthetic values in landscape design, spatial quality, user perception and cultural context are evaluated through examples. In this way, students are expected to interpret the relationship between art and space within the context of landscape design, urban open spaces and cultural landscapes. The assessment of the course is based on written examinations, attendance/performance and assignment work. In-semester assessment consists of attendance/performance, assignment work and the midterm examination, accounting for 40% of the total grade. The final examination constitutes the end-of-semester assessment and accounts for 60% of the total grade. Students repeating the course are required to complete all assignments, attendance/performance requirements and examinations in accordance with the current assessment structure of the course.
