Objectives of the Course

The aim of the course is to enable students to gain knowledge about the types, general properties, and areas of use of structural materials used in landscape architecture practices; and to make basic evaluations for appropriate material selection by understanding material selection criteria.

Course Content

Within the scope of this course, the functions, general properties, areas of use, and selection criteria of structural materials used in landscape architecture practices are addressed. The course content includes the classification of materials, natural and artificial materials, aggregates, natural stones, wood, fired clay, glass, metal-based materials, and binders, together with their forms of use in landscape practices. Course assessment is based on written examinations, course participation/performance and assignment studies. In-term assessment accounts for 40% of the total grade and consists of course participation/performance, assignment studies and the mid-term examination. The end-of-term assessment consists of the final examination, accounting for 60% of the total grade. Students retaking the course are responsible for all assessment components defined within the current academic year. Accordingly, they are required to complete the assignment studies, course participation/performance activities, mid-term examination and final examination again.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week 1 - Theoretical
The aim, scope, course procedures, assessment and evaluation process, and the place of material knowledge in landscape architecture are addressed.
Week 2 - Theoretical
The appearance, surface properties, comfort, and user expectations affecting material selection are explained.
Week 3 - Theoretical
The safety-related surface properties in material selection are evaluated in terms of walking safety, fire safety, and impact and collision safety.
Week 4 - Theoretical
Mechanical, physical, and chemical properties, as well as cleaning and maintenance requirements in material selection, are addressed.
Week 5 - Theoretical
The classification of materials and the role of aggregates in landscape applications are examined.
Week 6 - Theoretical
Natural stones are addressed in terms of the use of stone in architecture, its general properties, and its forms of use in landscape applications.
Week 7 - Theoretical
Examples of natural stones used in landscape architecture, including granite, basalt, syenite, andesite, and serpentine, are examined.
Week 8 - Theoretical
Examples of natural stones used in landscape architecture, including marble, slate, travertine, and limestone, are examined.
Week 9 - Theoretical
The classification of stones according to their processing forms is evaluated through examples such as rubble stone, rough-dressed stone, fine-dressed stone, and cut stone.
Week 10 - Theoretical
The structure of wood material, growth characteristics of trees, and the classification of wood-source trees according to their hardness are addressed.
Week 11 - Theoretical
The processed forms of wood material, wood coverings, and their possible uses in landscape applications are examined.
Week 12 - Theoretical
Fired clay-based materials and glass coverings are addressed through examples such as ceramics, bricks, glass mosaic, glass paving blocks, and glass bricks.
Week 13 - Theoretical
Metal-based materials and examples of contemporary materials are examined in terms of their areas of use in landscape applications.
Week 14 - Theoretical
Binders, particularly cement, lime, and gypsum, are evaluated in terms of their basic properties and areas of use.
