Objectives of the Course

In this course, it is aimed to enable students to understand the concepts of city, urbanisation, urban integration, urban planning and urban ecosystem in relation to the discipline of landscape architecture. The course aims to enable students to evaluate the physical, social, economic, environmental and administrative components of the city in a holistic manner; to understand the stages of the urban planning process, physical planning hierarchy, land use decisions and their relationship with urban open and green space systems. It also aims to develop students’ ability to evaluate the role of landscape architects in urban planning processes in relation to environmental impacts, sustainability, public space, transportation, urban development and legislation.

Course Content

In this course, the concepts of city, urbanisation, urban integration and urban planning; parts of the city, the urban ecosystem, environmental and social impacts of urbanisation, urban outdoor spaces, the urban planning process, planning principles and physical planning hierarchy are addressed. Plan types such as national plans, regional plans, environmental plans, master development plans, implementation development plans, revision plans, additional plans, local development plans, improvement plans, tourism plans and conservation-oriented development plans are examined. Within the scope of the course, the relationship between urban planning decisions and land use, transportation, open and green space systems, environmental sustainability, public space, urban development and landscape architecture professional practice is evaluated. The assessment of the course is based on written examinations, course participation/performance, and assignment studies consisting of readings, topic research, in-class presentations and written submissions. Mid-term assessment consists of the mid-term examination (15%), course participation/performance (10%) and two assignment studies (15%), accounting for 40% of the total grade. The end-of-term assessment consists of the final examination (25%), course participation/performance (10%) and two assignment studies (25%), accounting for 60% of the total grade.
