Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to provide students with an engineering design perspective for solving problems encountered in agricultural biotechnology. Students will develop the ability to design biological systems, bioprocesses, and biotechnological products by considering scientific, technical, economic, environmental, ethical, and sustainability principles. The course enables students to analyze real-world problems, establish design criteria, generate alternative solutions, plan prototype or process designs, and evaluate their outcomes using engineering principles.

Course Content

Fundamental principles of the engineering design process; problem identification and needs assessment in agricultural biotechnology; determination of design criteria and constraints; design of biotechnological products, processes, and systems; bioprocess optimization; laboratory-to-industrial scale-up approaches; quality management and risk analysis; economic feasibility, environmental impact, sustainability, and ethical considerations; intellectual property rights; project-based design applications, technical report preparation, and design presentations.

Name of Lecturer(s)
Learning Outcomes
1.Explains and applies the fundamental stages of the engineering design process (problem definition, needs analysis, concept development).
2.Develops alternative solutions to design problems and selects the most appropriate solution using decision-making methods.
3.Plans the selected design project and prepares interim and final reports in accordance with scientific and technical standards.
4.Considers ethical, sustainability, and practical constraints within the design process.
5.Effectively presents and evaluates the developed design project both orally and in written form.
