Objectives of the Course

The purpose of this course is to familiarize the student with diplomatic language, which is different from the language used in ordinary life. The difference stems mostly from the terms and expressions used that have a meaning other than those found in dictionaries. The course is an introduction to the art of communication and finesse employed in the diplomatic profession and as such, should be taken only by those who are interested in seeking employment in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Course Content

Week 1 - Theoretical
Mastering the technique of diplomatic correspondence and translation: Understanding sentence unity, coherence, word choice, tone, strategy, structure and usage of language in diplomacy and translation.

Standard forms of diplomatic correspondence: Notes (Signed Note, Verbal Note, Collective Note, Circular Note) Aide-Memoire and Memorandum, Non-paper, Talking points, White Paper

Various diplomatic documents and texts: Credentials, Letters of appointment and recall, messages of congratulations, of thanks and condolences, invitations, visiting cards, Letters of Provision (Letters of Commission) and Exequatur for Consular officers, treaties, full powers, final act, memorandum of understanding (MOUs),agreed minutes (proces verbal),interim agreements ( ad referendum), declarations (policy statements), joint Communiqués, Agreements, evasive replies( Fin de non recervoir) and rejection of diplomatic correspondence, ultimatum, UN resolutions and decision
