Objectives of the Course

This course provides an introduction to International Political Economy (IPE); the basic theories like globalization related to this interdisciplinary field. Students will be introduced to the mainstream theories of IPE along with critical perspectives, the topics of international money and finance, trade and transnational corporations (TNCs), the issues of economic development and North-South relations.

Course Content

International political economy is a scientific discipline that examines the interaction that took place at the international level between economic and political factors. This discipline has been also recently expressed as global political economy primarily focuses on governments as well as global corporations, activities that occurred between international organizations and various social movements.

1.Identify tensions that exist between states and markets.
2.Compare and contrast the three main theories of IPE along with other critical approaches.
3.Analyze the balance of payments of states and how different investments, currency changes and privatization may affect the current and capital accounts.
4.Identify the different models of economic development employed by developing states.
5. Social structure and relations of production are established.
