Objectives of the Course

The objective of this course is to introduce students to the core concepts, theories, and contemporary debates at the intersection of political science and sociology. Throughout the semester, the course aims to provide a sociological analysis of foundational concepts such as power, the state, authority, and legitimacy, alongside key dynamics shaping modern politics, including elite theories, political parties, social movements, media, and civil society. The ultimate goal is to enhance students' analytical thinking capacities and enable them to critically evaluate political events and structures by linking them to their broader social contexts.

Course Content

The Political Sociology course examines the reciprocal relationship between politics and society from both historical and theoretical perspectives. The course initially focuses on macro-theoretical frameworks such as power, the state, types of legitimacy, and the relative autonomy of politics. It then moves forward to explore elite theories, the intersection of culture, literature, and politics, the role of media in the political sphere, and the structure of the state through the lens of historical sociology. In the final section, the operational mechanisms of modern democracies—namely social movements, political parties, political participation, models of political leadership, and interest groups/civil society organizations—are analyzed in depth through both empirical and theoretical dimensions.
