This course examines Turkey’s modernization process, the dynamics of the transition from a single-party regime to a multi-party system, and the political system's history of constitutional and institutional crises. The course aims to critically analyze political elites, ideological movements, military interventions, and social events within the historical context of contemporary Turkish politics.
This course covers the political processes, institutions, and actors spanning the period from the modernization efforts of the late Ottoman Empire to present-day Turkey. The course content addresses the Young Turks and the Second Constitutional Era, the National Struggle and the founding of the Republic, the reforms and ideology of the single-party era, the transition to multi-party politics, and the rule of the Democrat Party. Additionally, it examines the impact of the military interventions of 1960, 1971, and 1980 on the political system, constitutions, and party structures. The 1980s—marked by neo-liberal transformation—the coalition governments of the 1990s, civil-military relations, and center-periphery theory constitute the course's primary areas of focus.
| 1. | Explain the concept of ideology, the center-periphery theory, and the epistemological origins of Turkish political thought at a theoretical level. |
| 2. | It analyzes the impact and reflections of the "Three Modes of Politics" legacy (Ottomanism, Islamism, and Turkism) from the late Ottoman period on the political movements of the Republican era. |
| 3. | It examines the institutional, societal, and ideological structure of Kemalism (the Six Arrows), as well as its tensions and interactions with the mainstream Turkish right and left. |
| 4. | It compares the mainstream political movements in Türkiye (Left-Socialism, Turkish Nationalism, Conservatism, Islamism, and Liberalism) through their historical turning points and key actors. |
| 5. | It interprets the political alliances, populist rhetoric, debates on post-Kemalism, and current axes of polarization in present-day Turkey through a critical lens and within a historical context. |
| 6. | It defines new social dynamics—such as the feminism and environmental movements that emerged in post-1980 Turkey—and the impact of these dynamics on ideological transformation. |
