Objectives of the Course

This course examines Turkey’s modernization process, the dynamics of the transition from a single-party regime to a multi-party system, and the political system's history of constitutional and institutional crises. The course aims to critically analyze political elites, ideological movements, military interventions, and social events within the historical context of contemporary Turkish politics.

Course Content

This course covers the political processes, institutions, and actors spanning the period from the modernization efforts of the late Ottoman Empire to present-day Turkey. The course content addresses the Young Turks and the Second Constitutional Era, the National Struggle and the founding of the Republic, the reforms and ideology of the single-party era, the transition to multi-party politics, and the rule of the Democrat Party. Additionally, it examines the impact of the military interventions of 1960, 1971, and 1980 on the political system, constitutions, and party structures. The 1980s—marked by neo-liberal transformation—the coalition governments of the 1990s, civil-military relations, and center-periphery theory constitute the course's primary areas of focus.
