Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to provide students with fundamental knowledge of restorative dentistry, including the structure and development of dental tissues, the etiology and mechanisms of dental caries, cavity preparation principles, caries diagnostic methods, and the clinical application of restorative materials. By the end of the course, students are expected to recognize the instruments used in restorative dentistry, explain basic cavity preparation principles, evaluate the caries process from a biological perspective, and acquire foundational knowledge of appropriate restorative approaches.

Course Content

This course covers the basic instruments used in restorative dentistry, cavity classifications, and general principles of cavity preparation. Theoretical knowledge regarding amalgam and composite restorations is provided, along with an examination of tooth development, embryology, and histological characteristics of dental tissues. In addition, theories of dental caries, its etiology, formation mechanisms, and microbiology are discussed. The role of saliva in oral health, the influence of diet on caries development, caries classifications, and diagnostic methods are also covered in detail.

Learning Outcomes
1.Explains the basic instruments used in restorative dentistry, cavity classifications, and general cavity preparation principles, and distinguishes their appropriate clinical applications.
2.Compares the biological, mechanical, and clinical properties of amalgam and composite restorations and selects the appropriate restorative approach.
3.Analyzes tooth development, embryology, and histological characteristics of dental tissues and evaluates their relationship with caries formation.
4.Explains the etiology and microbiology of dental caries and its relationship with saliva and diet, and discusses preventive dentistry approaches.
5.Evaluates dental caries classification systems and differentiates and classifies various carious lesions.
6.Evaluates caries diagnostic methods based on scientific principles and plans an appropriate diagnostic process.
