Objectives of the Course

The aim is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the anatomy, histology, and physiological functions of the periodontal tissues, including the gingiva, periodontal ligament, cementum, and alveolar bone. Furthermore, the course is designed to introduce the etiological factors involved in the development of periodontal diseases, explain the underlying mechanisms of disease pathogenesis, and present the classification, clinical examination, diagnosis, prognosis, and contemporary treatment approaches for periodontal diseases.

Course Content

This course covers the anatomical, histological, and physiological characteristics of the periodontal tissues. Local and systemic etiological factors involved in the development of periodontal diseases, as well as the underlying mechanisms of disease pathogenesis, are examined. In addition, the classification of periodontal diseases, clinical and radiographic examination methods, diagnostic and prognostic assessment, and non-surgical periodontal treatment approaches are presented. Upon completion of the course, students are expected to acquire fundamental knowledge and develop the ability to assess the diagnosis and treatment processes of periodontal diseases

Name of Lecturer(s)
Learning Outcomes
1.Explains the anatomical and histological characteristics, as well as the physiological functions, of the gingiva, periodontal ligament, cementum, and alveolar bone that constitute the periodontal tissues
2.Describes the local etiological factors that contribute to the initiation and progression of periodontal diseases
3.Describes the interactions between dental biofilm and the host immune response and explains the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases
4.TDifferentiates the clinical characteristics of periodontal diseases, particularly gingivitis and periodontitis
5.Describes the contemporary classification system of periodontal diseases and applies it appropriately in the classification of clinical cases
6.Performs periodontal examination procedures and appropriately applies periodontal index systems in clinical assessment
7.Evaluates and interprets the clinical and radiographic findings relevant to periodontal diseases and formulates an appropriate diagnosis
8.Evaluates the prognosis of periodontal diseases and formulates an appropriate treatment plan
9.Describes the objectives, principles, and procedural steps of non-surgical periodontal therapy
10.Evaluates the effectiveness of non-surgical periodontal therapy
