Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to introduce the toothbrushes, interdental cleaning aids, ultrasonic scaler tips, periodontal scalers, and curettes used in oral hygiene instruction, dental prophylaxis, and root surface debridement procedures; to demonstrate their proper use; and to develop students’ practical skills in their application.

Course Content

The aim of this course is to introduce the fundamental instruments and equipment used in non-surgical periodontal therapy and to teach their proper methods of use. By the end of the course, students are expected to be able to identify the basic instruments utilized in periodontal treatment, apply them using appropriate techniques, and develop competency in their clinical use

Name of Lecturer(s)
Learning Outcomes

2.Explains the characteristics and indications for the use of toothpastes, antiseptic mouth rinses, mouthwashes, and oral irrigators
3.Identifies interdental cleaning aids (e.g., dental floss and interdental brushes) and applies proper usage techniques on jaw models
4.Differentiates the features and clinical purposes of the Williams periodontal probe, WHO periodontal probe, and Nabers furcation probe, and selects the appropriate instrument according to clinical requirements
5.Explains the working principles of ultrasonic devices and scaler tips and demonstrates the ability to apply proper usage techniques on jaw models
6.Defines the characteristics of scaler instruments and demonstrates proper instrument handling and instrumentation techniques on jaw models
7.Defines all Gracey curettes (from Gracey 1/2 to Gracey 13/14) and their specific areas of use, and demonstrates the ability to apply correct angulation and instrumentation techniques on jaw models.
8.Identifies sharpening stones, performs appropriate sharpening techniques for periodontal hand instruments, and assesses the effectiveness of instrument sharpening
9.Explains the purposes of use of pumice and polishing paste and demonstrates polishing procedures on jaw models
10.Explains the indications and application methods of desensitizing agents and demonstrates their proper application on jaw models
