The aim of this course is to provide dental students with fundamental knowledge of forensic medicine and forensic dentistry, including their legal responsibilities and fields of practice, and to develop competencies in recognizing, evaluating, documenting, and reporting forensic cases. The course covers trauma, maxillofacial injuries, forensic toxicology, human identification, disaster victim identification (DVI), anthropological investigations, bite mark analysis, and the role of dentists in cases of violence and child abuse. It also aims to enhance students' ability to work within ethical, legal, and multidisciplinary frameworks.
The course includes the definition, historical development, and scope of forensic medicine and forensic dentistry; recognition and reporting of forensic cases; evaluation of evidence in trauma and maxillofacial injuries; legal aspects of trauma within the Turkish Criminal Code; psychiatric assessment of trauma; forensic toxicology and procedures for collecting, preserving, and transporting toxicological specimens; preparation of forensic reports; human identification through dental records, dental analysis, bite mark examination, and anthropological methods; disaster victim identification (DVI); the role of dentists in facial reconstruction; forensic dental record systems and databases; and the ethical, legal, and professional responsibilities of dentists in cases involving violence against women and child abuse.
