Objectives of the Course

To teach students the basic techniques, devices, and equipment used in laboratory environments along with their working principles; and to provide a safe laboratory culture by conveying universal safety rules, risks of chemical substances, and legal legislations/regulations.

Course Content

This course covers general laboratory types, the use of basic equipment such as measuring, heating, and centrifugation devices, laboratory safety and biosafety levels, storage and risk codes of chemical substances (acids, solvents, etc.), waste management, and laboratory operation regulations.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week 1 - Theoretical
Introduction to laboratory techniques: General concept of laboratory, classification, and main workspaces.
Week 2 - Theoretical
Laboratory equipment I: Basic glassware, porcelain vessels, analytical balances, and volumetric measurement techniques.
Week 3 - Theoretical
Laboratory equipment II: Working principles of heaters, ovens, water baths, stirrers, and centrifuges.
Week 4 - Theoretical
Laboratory equipment III: Use of microscopes, pH meters, and basic spectrophotometric measurement tools.
Week 5 - Theoretical
Laboratory safety rules I: Universal laboratory rules, personal protective equipment (PPE), and dress standards.
Week 6 - Theoretical
Laboratory safety rules II: Action plans in fire, electrical, and device-induced emergencies, first aid, and emergency showers.
Week 7 - Theoretical
Biosafety and Disinfection: Laboratory biosafety levels (BSL 1-4), autoclave utilization, and sterilization techniques.
Week 8 - Theoretical
Chemical substances in laboratory I: Classification of chemicals, labeling, pictograms, and hazard symbols.
Week 9 - Theoretical
Chemical substances in laboratory II: Rules for reading Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS/SDS) and chemical storage matrix.
Week 10 - Theoretical
Chemical substances in laboratory III: Safe working with acids, bases, organic solvents, and toxic gases, use of fume hoods.
Week 11 - Theoretical
Laboratory waste management: Segregation and legal disposal of chemical, biological, sharps, and domestic wastes at source.
Week 12 - Theoretical
Solution preparation techniques in laboratory: Molarity, normality, percent solutions, and dilution calculation methods.
Week 13 - Theoretical
General regulations regarding laboratory applications and health units in Turkey, legal responsibilities, and inspections.
Week 14 - Theoretical
Workflow standardization in dentistry clinical and research laboratories, quality control processes, and general review.
