Objectives of the Course

To teach assessment of orthodontic treatment need and use of orthodontic diagnosis material; to teach preventive,interceptive and corrective orthodontic treatment principles.

Course Content

Using of orthodontic diagnosis material and treatment planning,using of cephalometry in treatment planning, growth stages and orthodontic interventions, early treatment of cleft palate patients, interceptive orthodontic approaches, preventive orthodontic approaches, etiology of oral habits and treatments, orthodontic tooth movement and forces, corrective orthodontic approaches, fixed and functional treatments, tme structures and relationships with orthodontics, adult orthodontics, importance of retention phase, cast analyses, appliance application in a case

Learning Outcomes
1.Recognize and classify dental, skeletal, functional, and craniofacial orthodontic anomalies, and explain their genetic, environmental, and functional (including respiratory dysfunction) etiological factors.
2.Explain the biological basis of orthodontic tooth movement, and evaluate the characteristics of orthodontic force, force sources, anchorage principles, and orthodontic wire/arch materials in the context of treatment planning.
3.Explain preventive and interceptive orthodontic approaches, tooth eruption guidance, and the principles of growth modification with functional jaw orthopedics and extraoral force-applying appliances.
4.Explain the treatment principles of Class I, Class II, Class III, and transverse anomalies, and the indications and application principles of fixed and removable appliances and surgical/distraction osteogenesis approaches.
5.Explain TMJ physiology and dysfunctions, orthodontic approaches in special conditions such as OSAS, cleft lip/palate, hypodontia/impacted teeth, and adult orthodontics, and the management of retention and relapse.

Definition of dental and skeletal orthodontic anomalies, basic concepts, and the general classification framework.
Week 2 - Theoretical
Preventive measures taken before malocclusion develops and interceptive approaches to early developing problems.
Week 3 - Theoretical
Guiding the eruption of primary and permanent teeth, space maintainers, and managing eruption anomalies.
Week 4 - Theoretical
Developmental anomalies affecting the craniofacial region and their orthodontic evaluation.
Week 5 - Theoretical
Genetic and environmental causes of malocclusions; hereditary and acquired etiological factors.
Week 6 - Theoretical
The effect of mouth breathing and airway problems on dentofacial development and malocclusion.
Week 7 - Theoretical
Functional malocclusions arising from jaw function and muscular imbalances, and their assessment.
Week 8 - Theoretical
Principles of growth modification with functional appliances and functional jaw orthopedic approaches.

Working principles and indications of extraoral appliances such as headgear and facemask.
