Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to provide students with knowledge of the normal microscopic structure, development, and basic histological organization of cells, tissues, and organs. The course covers microscope use, evaluation of histological specimens, basic histochemical techniques, histology of fundamental tissue types, essential stages of human embryonic development, and the histological and embryological characteristics of head and neck structures and tooth development. It also aims to enable students to apply this foundational knowledge in dental education, clinical sciences, and the assessment of the normal structure and development of oral tissues.

Course Content

The course includes an introduction to histology, types and use of microscopes, basic histochemical techniques, and the histology and microscopic evaluation of epithelial, connective, blood, cartilage, bone, muscle, nervous, and skin tissues. It also covers gametogenesis, fertilization, the early weeks of embryonic development, formation of germ layers, organogenesis, the fetal period, congenital anomalies and teratogens, as well as the development of the pharyngeal complex and head and neck. The final part of the course focuses on dental histology, including enamel, dentin, pulp, cementum, alveolar bone, and tooth development. Theoretical instruction is supported by laboratory practice to develop students' skills in microscope use, recognition of histological specimens, and evaluation of normal tissue morphology.
