This course aims to provide dental students with fundamental knowledge of microbiology and immunology, including the structure, classification, physiology, genetics, pathogenic mechanisms, diagnostic methods, prevention, and control of clinically important microorganisms. The course also aims to explain the principles of innate and adaptive immune responses and to emphasize the role of oral microbiota in dental biofilm formation, dental plaque, calculus formation, and dental caries development, enabling students to apply microbiological and immunological knowledge in the prevention, diagnosis, and management of oral diseases.
This course covers the fundamental concepts of microbiology and immunology relevant to dentistry. It includes the structure, classification, metabolism, genetics, cultivation, and diagnostic methods of microorganisms; clinically important bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microorganisms; antimicrobial agents and resistance mechanisms; microorganism–host interactions and mechanisms of microbial pathogenesis. The course also addresses immune system cells and organs, innate and adaptive immunity, antigen–antibody interactions, the complement system, MHC molecules, hypersensitivity reactions, autoimmunity, vaccines, and serological tests. Special emphasis is placed on oral microbiology, including the role of microorganisms in dental biofilm formation, dental plaque, calculus formation, and the development of dental caries.
| 1. | Knows the fundamentals of microbiology, the varieties of microorganisms, and explains their relationships with diseases that can be seen both generally and in the oral cavity |
| 2. | Knows the metabolism, nutrition, and reproduction conditions of medically important bacteria, and the diagnostic and preventive methods of infections they cause. |
| 3. | Knows the general characteristics of medically important viruses and explains the diagnostic and preventive methods of viral infections. |
| 4. | Knows the general characteristics of medically important fungi and explains the diagnostic and preventive methods of fungal infections. |
| 5. | Explains microorganism-microorganism and microorganism-host relationships, and correlates the body's normal flora and its role in oral ecology |
| 6. | Learns the characteristics and components of innate and acquired immunity, and correlates the principles of vaccines and prophylaxis with human immunity. |
| 7. | Explains the role of microorganisms in dental plaque formation, the role of microorganisms in dental calculus formation, dental caries microbiology, and their roles in pathogenesis. |
| 8. | Knows laboratory safety rules and complies with these rules in the working environment. |
