Objectives of the Course

To introduce some fundamental sociological approaches to illness, health, and medicine. The aim is to demonstrate that the definition of illness, the experience of illness, and even its treatment cannot be understood solely through physical and biological approaches, drawing on diverse sociological approaches to health. Furthermore, health and illness will be analyzed and discussed within the context of capitalism, class, and inequalities.

Course Content

Development of Health Sociology as a Discipline; Disease Phenomenon, History of Disease, Basic Factors Affecting Disease; Relationship between Disease-Health and Social, Cultural, Economic and Political Structure; Health and Disease in the Context of Social Class and Inequalities; Health Theory (Theoretical Approaches); Examples of research conducted in the field of health sociology in Turkey and their evaluation.
