Objectives of the Course

From the first newspapers published in the Ottoman Empire to the state of the Turkish press after the proclamation of the Republic, the history of the press in Turkey will be examined. The newspapers and prominent journalists of the period will be analyzed.

Course Content

The development of printing and printing in the world, the first printing houses in Turkey: Minority printing presses and Turkish printing presses, pre-Tanzimat press and broadcasting, foreign newspapers, Tanzimat period press and broadcasting, Regulation of Matbuat, Istibdat period press, first press strike, Young Turk newspapers, National Struggle period press and broadcasting: Istanbul and Anatolian press, Anadolu Agency, Full freedom for the press: Newspapers and magazines in the Second Constitutional Monarchy period, Press law and the amendments made on it, Press and broadcasting movements in the Republican period: Takrir-i Sükun, Independence Courts, 1931 Press and Criminal Laws, Single Party Period, Restrictions on the press, 1939-1945 World War II and examination of the reflections of the political events of the period on the press through newspaper examples, 1946-1950 period Turkish Journalism, 1950-1960 Period Turkish Journalism and DP's influence on the press

2.will be able to determine the emergence of the press in the Ottoman Empire and the role of the press in the modernization/democratization process.
