Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to enable students to develop critical thinking skills on gender justice by addressing the concept of gender in historical, cultural and social contexts. The course aims to understand how individuals and groups face gender-based inequalities and to provide students with the skills to generate solutions within the framework of the principles of justice, equality and inclusion. The course also aims to enable students to analyse the effects of gender in everyday life, education, law, politics, economy and media.

Course Content

This course begins by examining the theoretical foundations and historical development of the concept of gender. Basic theoretical approaches such as the differences between biological sex and gender, feminist thought, queer theory and how gender is culturally constructed are discussed. Then, the effects of gender on social institutions such as family, education, media, law, religion and labour life are evaluated. Forms of gender-based discrimination, inequality and violence and their reflections on individuals and groups are analysed. Exclusionary practices and discrimination practices faced by LGBTI+ individuals in social life also constitute an important part of the course. The concepts of gender justice and inclusion are discussed in both theoretical and practical frameworks, and how social policies based on equality can be developed are discussed. Legal regulations, policies and social movements on gender equality in Turkey and in the world are analysed. The course has an interactive and interdisciplinary structure that aims to enable students to develop a sensitive, critical and solution-oriented perspective on gender issues.
