Objectives of the Course

This course aims to examine forced migration movements, population policies, and settlement practices from the late Ottoman period to the foundation of the Republic of Turkey. Students will develop a comprehensive understanding of migration from historical, political, social, and legal perspectives.

Course Content

The course covers theories of migration and forced migration, Ottoman settlement policies, migration waves from Crimea, the Caucasus, and the Balkans, the 1923 Population Exchange between Turkey and Greece, and the early Republican settlement policies. Special emphasis is placed on nation-building processes and demographic engineering.
