Biophysics is an interdisciplinary branch of science therefore definition of biophysics does not have precise lines. Biophysics applies physical techniques and principles to medicine and biology. In other words, biophysicist investigates basic biology and medicine/health problem by using various branch of science like physics, physical chemistry, mathematic, electrical engineering, computer engineering, etc. using the methods of physics and mathematics.A biophysicist works on energy changes, radiation (ionazing and non) electric and magnetic fields, sight and hearing systems, light-tissue interaction, photosensitization, muscle contraction, ion channels and pumps, nerves, electrophysiology, identification of molecular structures and interection etc. Today biophysics is divided into three main branches as Molecular Biophysics, Cell biophysics, and System Biophysics which are inseparable sharply with each other.
The Masters degree program in the Department of Biophysics was founded and started education in the fall semester of 2005 -2006academic year. Seven students have successfully received their M.Sc. degree from the master's program of Department of Biophysics. The Department started to give education in doctorate degree programs in 2008-2009 educational year. Until now, three students have successfully received their Ph.D. degree. Being an interdisciplinary science, Biophysics discipline includes instructors from the medical biophysics, physiology and neurology departments.
Principles of the institution is to give scientific products having the appropriate universal criteria.
To train a doctor of science who notices the changes in today's world, who is able to adapt easily, learning-focused, productive, sensitive to social problems, who can make solutions and be in peace with himself and can lead if necessary, who is dominant in topics of biophysics, who can make independent researches and will be an example to society.
-To increase research performance of our department and recognition in scientific circle. -To increase the quality and diversity of education. -First starting with non ionizing radiation to develop services about health and environmental problems. -To do research project with other department of medical faculty and other faculties. -To gain graduate students, with the ability to make independent researches, scientific thinking synthesize a broad perspective of scientific events.
Physical Infrastructure
Biophysics (medicine) PhD program will be used for the four laboratories. These are; 1. Biophysics Lab. (40 m2) 2. Electrophysiology Lab. (30 m2) 3. ADU Scientific Research and Application Center: ADU-BILTEM (900m2) 4. ADU neurology Department Lab. (100 m2)
Technical Infrastructure
Non- ionizing radiation and molecular biophysics methods will be perform in Laboratory of Biophysics in Faculty of Medicine. Electrophysiology Laboratory (common lab with Physiology) has devices and data analysis system about experimental studies on EMG, nerve conduction velocity, ECG, Electrooculogram, galvanic skin resistance, evoked potential and temperature changes. ADU-BILTEM has analytical, molecular biology and cell culture lab which can be also available for students. ADU hospital Neurology department’s lab EMG, EEG and evoked potentials (VEP, SEP)studies can be done.
