This course aims to examine the emergence, development, and regional diversity of the Chalcolithic and Bronze Age cultures in the Aegean and Southeastern Europe through archaeological evidence. The course explores processes of mound formation and stratification, Early Bronze Age cultural developments, models of urbanisation, and interregional cultural interactions. Particular attention is given to the cultural trajectories of regions such as Thrace, Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, and Hungary, as well as to the comparative analysis of relationships between Anatolia, Mesopotamia, and the Aegean–Southeastern European world. The course further seeks to enable students to critically interpret the social, economic, and cultural developments of Chalcolithic and Bronze Age societies within a broader regional and chronological framework.
This course examines the Chalcolithic and Bronze Age cultures of the Aegean and Southeastern Europe through archaeological evidence. It addresses processes of mound formation and stratification, the transition from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age, Early Bronze Age cultural developments, and models of urbanisation. The course also evaluates major archaeological sites and cultural traditions in regions such as Thrace, Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Hungary, and the Balkans, while comparatively discussing the cultural relationships and interaction networks between Anatolia, Mesopotamia, and the Aegean–Southeastern European world. Throughout the course, settlement patterns, economic structures, production activities, and social organisation of Chalcolithic and Bronze Age societies are analysed in light of archaeological data and material culture.
