Objectives of the Course

The objective of this course is to convey the philosophy, principles, historical evolution, and industrial application methods of Total Quality Management (TQM) to students. Within the scope of this course, it is aimed for students to acquire the skills to identify problems in manufacturing and service processes, analyze data using the seven core quality tools, apply continuous improvement methodologies such as Kaizen, Lean Production, and Six Sigma to business processes, and establish a standard-compliant quality management culture.

Course Content

Introduction to Total Quality Management and management approaches; dimensions of quality, pioneers, and historical development; quality costs and management principles; core tools of TQM (fishbone diagram, Pareto analysis, histogram, etc.); process management and quality management systems; Six Sigma, benchmarking, reengineering, and lean manufacturing concepts; Kaizen, quality circles, and global/local TQM application case studies.

Name of Lecturer(s)
Ins. Evrim ÇEVİK
Learning Outcomes
1.Explain the philosophy of Total Quality Management, various management approaches, and the core principles of quality pioneers (Deming, Juran, Crosby, etc.) by correlating them with manufacturing processes.
2.Classify quality costs within a manufacturing enterprise and propose process designs that comply with quality management principles.
3.Apply the Core Tools of TQM (Cause-and-Effect Diagram, Pareto Analysis, Scatter Diagram, etc.) to resolve quality defects encountered along manufacturing lines.
4.Analyze continuous improvement approaches (Kaizen, Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, Quality Circles) and plan the productivity- and quality-driven transformation of a production process.
5.Evaluate the corporate quality maturity level of an organization by reviewing international quality standards and successful global/local TQM models.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week 1 - Theoretical & Practice
Theory: Course introduction, objectives, and an introduction to Total Quality Management (TQM). Application: Case study analysis demonstrating the differences between TQM-oriented approaches and traditional management models in industry.
Week 2 - Theoretical & Practice
Theory: Management Approaches (Classical, Neoclassical, and Modern Approaches). Application: Discussion on the reflections of management theories using the organizational chart of a manufacturing enterprise.
Week 3 - Theoretical & Practice
Theory: The concept of quality, dimensions of quality, and its components. Application: Classroom analysis of the 8 dimensions of quality for a concrete product selected from the metal/manufacturing sector (e.g., a machine component).
Week 4 - Theoretical & Practice
Theory: Quality Pioneers (Deming, Juran, Crosby, Ishikawa, Taguchi). Application: Classwork adapting Deming's 14 principles and the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) cycle into manufacturing processes.
Week 5 - Theoretical & Practice
Theory: Historical development of Total Quality Management. Application: Chronological analysis and group work on the global paradigm shift from the inspection stage to the total quality stage.
Week 6 - Theoretical & Practice
Theory: Quality Costs (Prevention, Appraisal, and Internal/External Failure Costs). Application: Simulation of a Quality Cost Report based on real-world factory data covering scrap, rework, and warranty expenditures.
Week 7 - Theoretical & Practice
Theory: Quality Management Principles (Customer focus, leadership, engagement of people, etc.). Application: Practical analysis of the "Customer Focus" principle through customer complaint management scenarios.
Week 8 - Theoretical & Practice
Theory: Total Quality Management Tools and Midterm Exam. Application: Post-midterm presentation of fundamental data collection forms and check sheets using industrial examples.
Week 9 - Theoretical & Practice
Theory: Process Management (Identification, mapping, and control of processes). Application: Modeling a part-reception or final inspection process in class with its respective inputs, outputs, and KPI standards.
Week 10 - Theoretical & Practice
Theory: Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001 and other sectoral standards). Application: Mapping ISO 9001 standard clauses against audit scenarios within a manufacturing facility.
Week 11 - Theoretical & Practice
Theory: Six Sigma and Benchmarking Methodologies. Application: Calculation of a process Sigma level (DPMO - Defects Per Million Opportunities) and designing a sample benchmarking project.
Week 12 - Theoretical & Practice
heory: Business Process Reengineering and Lean Manufacturing Principles. Application: Identification of the 7 deadly wastes (Muda) in manufacturing and analysis of waste reduction on a production line layout.
Week 13 - Theoretical & Practice
Theory: Kaizen (Continuous Improvement) and Quality Circles. Application: Establishing 4-5 student "Quality Circle" teams to construct Fishbone (Ishikawa) and Pareto diagrams for a chronic manufacturing defect.
Week 14 - Theoretical & Practice
Theory: TQM Applications globally and in Turkey. Application: Evaluation of best-practice presentations from successful manufacturing enterprises that have achieved the EFQM Excellence Model or the Turkey Quality Award (KalDer).
