Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to provide information about business management, management theories, leadership in management, global business management, and the importance of teamwork in management. Within the scope of the course, students will learn, in a practical way, the objectives, types, and functions of businesses, as well as growth and merger strategies in business.

Course Content

Basic concepts related to business management; the objectives, functions, environment, and historical development of the business; types and classification of businesses; growth and merger strategies in businesses; teamwork in business management; concepts of manager, leadership, and motivation; historical development of management thought; traditional and modern management theories.

Week 2 - Theoretical & Practice
Basic concepts related to business management and the objectives of the enterprise / Application: Analysis and examination of the basic and general objectives of businesses.
Week 3 - Theoretical & Practice
The business environment and historical development / Application: Examination of a case analysis related to the internal and external environment of the business.
Week 4 - Theoretical & Practice
The business’s core and supporting functions / Application: Evaluation of core functions and examination of case analysis.
Week 5 - Theoretical & Practice
Management function and the functions of management / Application: Examination of case studies related to the management function.
Week 6 - Theoretical & Practice
Teamwork in Business Management / Practice: Discussion and case study on the importance and necessity of being a team.
Week 7 - Theoretical & Practice
Authority, Power and Leadership in Business Management: Manager, Leadership and motivation concepts / Application: Conducting a case analysis regarding leadership sources and characteristics and the differences between manager and leader.
Week 8 - Theoretical & Practice
Development of contemporary management thought: Characteristics of the classical and neoclassical periods / Application: Examination of prominent practices in the classical and neoclassical periods.
Week 9 - Theoretical & Practice
The development of contemporary management thought: Characteristics of the modern and postmodern periods / Application: Examination of prominent practices in the modern and postmodern periods.
Week 10 - Theoretical & Practice
Classical period management thoughts (Traditional management theories): Scientific Management Approach (Taylorism), Management Process Approach (H. Fayol) and Bureaucracy Approach (M. Weber) / Application: Examination of the thoughts and practices of prominent scientists.
Week 11 - Theoretical & Practice
Neoclassical management theories (Human Resources Approach in Management, Behavioral Approach) / Application: Douglas McGregor: Theory X and Theory Y, Chris Argyris: Mature and Immature Personality Model, Abraham Maslow: Human Needs Theory, and Rensis Likert: System 1 – System 4 Model applications.
Week 12 - Theoretical & Practice
Modern management theory: The systems approach in management and the contingency approach / Application: Conducting a case analysis of organizational structures based on approaches.
Week 13 - Theoretical & Practice
Types of businesses and classification of businesses / Application: Providing examples regarding the examination and classification of businesses in terms of their different aspects.

Growth and merger strategies in businesses / Application: Case study on types of mergers.
