Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the ISO 9001 Quality Management System (QMS), the most widely implemented quality management standard in industry, including all of its requirements, and to develop practical competence in auditing management systems in accordance with the ISO 19011 guidelines. Throughout the course, students are expected to acquire the ability to conduct organizational context analysis, manage processes using risk-based thinking, identify and document nonconformities in production environments, initiate corrective actions, and successfully perform professional internal and external audits—from planning and execution to reporting—either as auditors or auditees.

Course Content

Quality concepts, quality gurus, and the fundamentals of standardization; the High-Level Structure (HLS) of ISO 9001:2015 and all management system requirements (Clauses 4–10) based on the Plan–Do–Check–Act (PDCA) cycle; Integrated Management Systems (ISO 14001 and ISO 45001); management system auditing in accordance with ISO 19011; auditor competencies; preparation of audit programs and checklists; opening and closing meetings; on-site auditing; identification and classification of audit findings (major and minor nonconformities); and preparation of professional technical audit reports.

Learning Outcomes
1.Explain the relationship between standardization, certification, and accreditation, and demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental principles and the High-Level Structure (HLS) of the ISO 9001 Quality Management System standard.
2.Analyze the organizational context, interested parties and their expectations, quality policy, and quality objectives of a manufacturing organization, and document these elements in accordance with the relevant requirements of the ISO 9001 standard.
3.Analyze nonconformities occurring in manufacturing operations or quality control processes, perform root cause analysis, and prepare a Corrective Action Report (CAR) in accordance with ISO 9001 Clause 10 (Improvement).
4.Plan a management system audit program in accordance with the ISO 19011 auditing guidelines and develop professional audit checklists tailored to the processes being audited.
5.Simulate the stages of an audit—including the opening meeting, on-site audit, and closing meeting—evaluate objective audit evidence, and prepare a professional technical audit report in accordance with internationally recognized auditing practices.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week 1 - Theoretical & Practice
Introduction to the course; the concept of quality, historical development of quality, quality gurus, and the fundamental principles of quality management. Practical: Comparative case analysis of two industrial management models (one successful and one unsuccessful) from the perspective of Total Quality Management (TQM) and quality management principles.
Week 2 - Theoretical & Practice
Standardization, standards, conformity assessment, certification, and accreditation concepts. Practical: Exercises on the roles of the Turkish Accreditation Agency (TÜRKAK), the Turkish Standards Institution (TSE), and Notified Bodies, including verification of the validity of CE marking and ISO certificates.
Week 3 - Theoretical & Practice
ISO 9000 Quality Management Systems: fundamental concepts, quality management principles, terms, and definitions. Practical: Exercises on the correct use of the standard's technical terminology, including concepts such as process, documented information, and nonconformity.
Week 4 - Theoretical & Practice
Introduction to the ISO 9001 standard, the High-Level Structure (HLS), organizational context, and interested parties. Practical: Conducting a SWOT analysis and preparing an Interested Parties Expectations Matrix based on a metal processing factory case study.
Week 5 - Theoretical & Practice
Leadership, quality policy, organizational roles, responsibilities, and authorities. Practical: Developing a corporate Quality Policy containing measurable commitments and preparing a Job Description Template in accordance with ISO 9001 requirements.
Week 6 - Theoretical & Practice
Risk-based thinking, opportunities, quality objectives, and planning processes. Practical: Preparing risk assessment records for production and laboratory processes and developing quality objectives based on the SMART criteria.
Week 7 - Theoretical & Practice
Support processes: resource management, competence, awareness, communication, and documented information. Practical: Designing a personnel training matrix, equipment calibration tracking card, and document coding/revision control register.
Week 8 - Theoretical & Practice
Operational processes, product and service realization, and Midterm Examination. Practical: Analysis of operational control documents related to design, production, and qualification processes as part of the midterm examination.
Week 9 - Theoretical & Practice
Performance evaluation, monitoring, measurement, analysis, customer satisfaction, and internal audit concepts. Practical: Graphical analysis of customer complaint data and scrap/rework rates, followed by a Management Review (MR) meeting agenda simulation.
Week 10 - Theoretical & Practice
Nonconformity management, corrective actions, and continual improvement. Practical: Root cause analysis using the Fishbone (Ishikawa) Diagram and completion of a Corrective Action Request (CAR) form based on a real laboratory or production nonconformity scenario (e.g., incorrect measurement or acceptance of the wrong raw material).
Week 11 - Theoretical & Practice
Integrated Management Systems (ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001), practical applications of management systems, and overall course evaluation. Practical: Developing an integration matrix demonstrating how the common High-Level Structure (HLS) requirements of the three standards can be incorporated into a single integrated management system manual.
Week 12 - Theoretical & Practice
Auditing of quality management systems: audit concepts, audit types (internal, external, and supplier audits), and the ISO 19011 auditing guideline. Practical: Designing an annual Internal Audit Program and a supplier audit schedule for a manufacturing organization.
Week 13 - Theoretical & Practice
Auditor competence, personal attributes of auditors, preparation of audit programs, and development of audit checklists. Practical: Preparing a professional audit checklist for the Incoming Quality Control or Heat Treatment process with reference to the relevant ISO 9001 requirements.
Week 14 - Theoretical & Practice
Conducting the audit: opening meeting, on-site audit, evaluation of audit findings, closing meeting, and preparation of the audit report. Practical: Classroom simulation of an audit involving Lead Auditor, Auditor, and Auditee (Production/Quality Manager) roles, followed by a closing meeting and preparation of a final audit report containing major and minor nonconformities.
