Objectives of the Course

To introduce the science of finance by explaining its fundamental concepts and topics. To help students better recognize and analyze financial problems they may encounter in both their professional and personal lives, and to teach the knowledge, techniques, and methods needed for making financial decisions.

Course Content

Financial management and basic concepts, Functions of financial management, The role of financial management in businesses, Business environment and credit institutions, Digital transformation and next-generation finance (FinTech), Fundamental principles of finance, The time value of money, Financial markets and investment instruments, Behavioral finance and investor psychology, and Break-even point and leverage analyses.

Introduction to the course and an introduction to financial management / Practice: Students prepare a personal financial plan by creating their own monthly budgets.
Week 2 - Theoretical & Practice
Financial management and basic concepts / Application: Discussion of the role of basic concepts in our current daily lives.
Week 3 - Theoretical & Practice
Functions of financial management / Application: Discussion of the importance of the relevant functions and case analysis.
Week 4 - Theoretical & Practice
The role of financial management in businesses / Practice: Discussion of the importance of the duties and responsibilities of financial management in businesses and case analysis.
Week 5 - Theoretical & Practice
Financial management, the business environment, and credit institutions (short-, medium-, and long-term financing sources) / Practice: Examining and discussing the business’s relationship with credit institutions.
Week 6 - Theoretical & Practice
Digital transformation and next-generation finance (FinTech) / Application: Examination of current mobile banking, digital wallet, and payment systems applications.
Week 7 - Theoretical & Practice
Fundamental Principles of Finance / Application: Discussion and examination of the importance and benefits of the fundamental principles.

Time value of money / Application: Calculation of the time value of money and case analysis.

Financial statement reading and interpretation / Application: Visual analysis of the financial condition of a well-known brand.
Week 10 - Theoretical & Practice
Financial markets and investment instruments (stocks, bonds and funds) / Application: Examining the prospectus of a current initial public offering process and tracking the IPO steps.
Week 11 - Theoretical & Practice
Financial markets and investment instruments (foreign exchange markets, gold, commodities and interest rates) / Application: Interpretation and analysis of changes in markets following central bank interest rate decisions based on charts.
Week 12 - Theoretical & Practice
Behavioral finance and investor psychology / Application: Examination and discussion of the psychological mistakes people make when making financial decisions, herd mentality, and panic selling through past financial bubbles.
Week 13 - Theoretical & Practice
Break-even point and leverage analyses (Fixed and variable costs, profit threshold, operating and financial leverage logic) / Application: Break-even point and leverage calculations through a simple entrepreneurial scenario.
Week 14 - Theoretical & Practice
Career fields in the finance sector and term summary / Application: Reviewing current job postings in the finance field and analyzing resumes (CVs) according to students’ career goals.
