The aim of this course is to teach students the structure and functioning of production systems. It is intended to enable students to understand fundamental methods such as demand forecasting, capacity planning, and inventory management. Additionally, it aims to train qualified intermediate-level personnel who can efficiently plan and control resources in factories.
Basic Concepts: Definition of production systems; fundamentals and structural elements of production systems (raw materials, labor, capital, knowledge, technology); classification of production systems and process types; Classical production systems: Intermittent (Job-Shop / Workshop-type) production systems, Continuous production systems (Flow-type), Project-based production systems, and Batch (Group / Batch) production systems; Demand forecasting: Fundamentals of qualitative (judgmental) forecasting methods and quantitative (numerical) time series analysis; Facility location selection strategies and analytical methods: Importance and stages of facility location selection and factors affecting location selection (proximity to market, raw materials, labor, infrastructure, incentives); Capacity concept and types: Design (Theoretical) Capacity, Effective Capacity, and Actual (Realized) Production; Capacity planning: Concepts of capacity utilization rate (CUR) and productivity (profitability/efficiency). Long-, medium-, and short-term capacity planning strategies; Inventory management and basic models: Inventory costs, economic order quantity (EOQ) model, and holding costs; Inventory control systems and reorder points: Continuous review (Q) system, periodic review (P) system, and safety stock calculation.
| 1. | Can define production systems, their structural elements, and basic concepts. |
| 2. | Can distinguish classical production systems (intermittent, continuous, project-based, batch) according to their structural and operational characteristics. |
| 3. | Can list the factors affecting the facility location selection and the basic stages of site selection. |
| 4. | Can perform capacity utilization rate and efficiency calculations using design, effective, and actual capacity types. |
| 5. | Can explain long-term, medium-term, and short-term capacity planning strategies for businesses. |
