Objectives of the Course

The main objective of this course is to teach students fundamental statistical concepts and equip them with the skills to collect data and organize it using tables and graphs. It also aims to enable them to make accurate predictions in production and business processes and make data-driven decisions by using analytical methods such as measures of central tendency, measures of variability, and index numbers.

Course Content

Definition and scope of statistics; Statistical units and their types; Variables and types of variables; Population, census, sample, and parameter; Sampling methods; Measurement and types of scales: nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio scales; Statistical series; Graphical analysis of statistical series; Sensitive averages; Insensitive averages; Standard deviation and variance; Index numbers: spatial index, time index, simple and composite indexes, fixed-base and chain-base indexes; Statistical estimation and decision-making; Regression and correlation analysis.

Name of Lecturer(s)
Learning Outcomes
1.Can define the basic concepts related to the science of statistics.
2.Can define the concepts of statistics, population, sample, parameter, and variable and explain the differences between them.
3.Can distinguish statistical data and units according to their types such as qualitative/quantitative, continuous/discrete, and appropriate levels of measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval, ratio).
4.It can analyze central tendency by calculating sensitive (arithmetic, geometric, harmonic) and non-sensitive (mode, median) averages according to the structure of the dataset.
5.It can compare periodic and regional changes in production costs, scrap amounts, or performance data through simple, compound, fixed-base, and variable-base index calculations.
