Objectives of the Course

The aim of the Technology Investment and R&D Management course is to enable students to understand the strategic importance of research and development activities in organizations, learn the planning and management processes of technology investments, conduct new product development activities, and acquire knowledge and skills related to the effective management of R&D projects. The course also aims to raise awareness of R&D support mechanisms, intellectual and industrial property rights, design optimization, cost improvement, and digital transformation technologies.

Course Content

This course covers the concepts of technology, innovation, and R&D; the structure and management of R&D centers; R&D support and incentive mechanisms; technology investment planning; R&D project management; idea generation and innovation processes; new product development activities; engineering change management (ECN); design improvement and optimization methods; cost reduction studies; patent and utility model application processes; intellectual and industrial property rights; the use of digital transformation technologies in R&D activities; performance measurement and reporting methods; and industrial R&D applications.

1.Explains the concepts of R&D, innovation, and technology investment and evaluates their importance for organizational competitiveness and sustainable development.
2.Explains the planning, execution, monitoring, and reporting processes of R&D projects and applies project management tools and techniques.
3.Analyzes new product development, design improvement, design optimization, and cost reduction processes and develops appropriate solution proposals.
4.Explains patent, utility model, industrial design, and other intellectual property rights processes and relates them to R&D activities.
5.Evaluates digital technologies, support mechanisms, and performance measurement methods used in R&D activities and makes technology-oriented decisions.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week 1 - Theoretical & Practice
Technology, Innovation, and R&D Concepts. The concepts of technology, innovation, and research and development are examined, focusing on their roles in enhancing organizational competitiveness. The contribution of R&D activities to product, process, and organizational innovation is evaluated.
Week 2 - Theoretical & Practice
R&D Organization and R&D Centers. The organizational structures, duties, and responsibilities of R&D departments, as well as the establishment criteria of R&D centers, are examined. R&D center practices and management processes in Türkiye are evaluated.
Week 3 - Theoretical & Practice
R&D Supports and Incentive Mechanisms. National support and incentive programs used in financing R&D projects are discussed. TÜBİTAK, KOSGEB, Ministry of Industry and Technology supports, and tax incentives are examined.
Week 4 - Theoretical & Practice
Technology Investments and Strategic Planning. Technology investment planning, investment decision processes, and technology roadmap development are discussed. Evaluation criteria used in technology selection are examined.
Week 5 - Theoretical & Practice
R&D Project Management. The planning, execution, and monitoring processes of R&D projects are examined. Work breakdown structures, scheduling, resource management, and risk management practices are evaluated.
Week 6 - Theoretical & Practice
Idea Development and Innovation Management. Methods for generating, evaluating, and transforming ideas into innovation processes are discussed. Creativity techniques and benchmarking applications are examined.
Week 7 - Theoretical & Practice
New Product Development Process (NPD). All stages of the new product development process, from idea generation to market launch, are examined. Product validation, prototyping, and customer requirement management are evaluated.
Week 8 - Theoretical & Practice
New Product Development Procedures and ECN Management. New product development procedures, design review activities, and engineering change management processes are discussed. The importance of revision and documentation management is emphasized.
Week 9 - Theoretical & Practice
Design Improvement and Design Optimization. Design improvement activities aimed at enhancing product performance are examined. Value engineering, optimization methods, and design-for-manufacturing approaches are evaluated.
Week 10 - Theoretical & Practice
Cost Improvement and Productivity Analysis. Activities aimed at reducing product costs and increasing productivity are discussed. Alternative material selection and process improvement methods are examined.
Week 11 - Theoretical & Practice
Intellectual and Industrial Property Rights. Patent, utility model, industrial design, and trademark protection processes are examined. The importance of protecting intellectual property rights in R&D activities is evaluated.
Week 12 - Theoretical & Practice
R&D and Digital Transformation Technologies. The contributions of CAD, CAM, CAE, PLM, and digital twin technologies to R&D processes are examined. The use of artificial intelligence and data analytics in product development is evaluated.
Week 13 - Theoretical & Practice
R&D Performance Measurement and Reporting. The measurement of R&D activities through performance indicators, evaluation of project outputs, and reporting methods are discussed. Technology readiness levels and project success criteria are examined.
Week 14 - Theoretical & Practice
Industrial R&D Applications and Case Studies. Successful R&D projects from various industries are examined, and technology investment, product development, and innovation management practices are evaluated. Real-life case studies are analyzed to reinforce the concepts learned throughout the course.
