Objectives of the Course

The aim of the Zero Waste and Sustainability course is to provide students with fundamental knowledge and awareness of environmental sustainability, resource efficiency, and the zero-waste approach. The course aims to enable students to evaluate carbon footprint, circular economy, product life cycle, renewable energy, energy efficiency, green transformation, and sustainable production practices, as well as develop solutions to reduce environmental impacts.

Course Content

This course covers the concepts of zero waste and sustainability, environmental problems and climate change, carbon footprint management, circular economy, resource efficiency, waste management and recycling systems, product life cycle and life cycle assessment, green manufacturing and cleaner production technologies, green transformation practices, renewable energy resources, energy management and energy efficiency, sustainable supply chains and green logistics, environmental management systems, sustainability standards, the use of digital technologies and artificial intelligence in sustainability applications, as well as zero-waste projects and industrial applications.

3.Evaluates waste management, recycling, product life cycle, and life cycle assessment applications and interprets sustainable production and consumption processes.
4.Explains the role of renewable energy resources, energy efficiency practices, and environmental management systems in sustainable development.
5.Evaluates the relationship between digital technologies, artificial intelligence, and sustainability practices and develops solution proposals for environmental challenges.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week 1 - Theoretical & Practice
Zero Waste and Sustainability Concepts. The fundamental principles of the zero-waste approach, sustainable development goals, and the importance of environmental sustainability are discussed. The impacts of zero-waste practices at individual and organizational levels are evaluated.
Week 2 - Theoretical & Practice
Environmental Problems and Climate Change. Global environmental problems, the causes and effects of climate change are examined. Approaches to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and environmental impacts are evaluated.
Week 3 - Theoretical & Practice
Carbon Footprint and Carbon Management. The concept of carbon footprint, calculation methods, and reduction strategies are discussed. Individual, organizational, and industrial carbon management practices are examined.
Week 4 - Theoretical & Practice
Circular Economy and Resource Efficiency. The circular economy approach, efficient use of resources, and methods for reducing waste generation are evaluated. Sustainable production and consumption concepts are examined.
Week 5 - Theoretical & Practice
Waste Management and Recycling Systems. Waste types, waste management hierarchy, recycling processes, and methods for converting waste into economic value are discussed.
Week 6 - Theoretical & Practice
Product Life Cycle and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Processes from raw material acquisition to end-of-life product disposal are examined. Life cycle assessment methods and environmental impact evaluation are discussed.
Week 7 - Theoretical & Practice
Green Manufacturing and Cleaner Production Technologies. Environmental impact reduction in manufacturing processes, energy and resource efficiency practices, and cleaner production technologies are evaluated.
Week 8 - Theoretical & Practice
Green Transformation and Sustainable Industry. The concept of green transformation, the European Green Deal, sustainable industrial practices, and their impacts on businesses are examined.
Week 9 - Theoretical & Practice
Renewable Energy Sources. Solar, wind, hydroelectric, biomass, and geothermal energy systems are discussed. The environmental and economic impacts of renewable energy technologies are evaluated.
Week 10 - Theoretical & Practice
Energy Efficiency and Energy Management. Energy-saving methods, energy management systems, and industrial energy efficiency practices are examined.
Week 11 - Theoretical & Practice
Sustainability practices in supply chain processes, environmentally friendly logistics activities, and methods for reducing carbon emissions are discussed.
Week 12 - Theoretical & Practice
Environmental Management Systems and Sustainability Standards. ISO 14001 Environmental Management System, sustainability reporting, environmental legislation, and corporate sustainability practices are examined.
Week 13 - Theoretical & Practice
Digital Technologies, Artificial Intelligence, and Sustainability. The contributions of digital transformation, Industry 4.0, artificial intelligence, and data analytics technologies to sustainability and resource management are evaluated.
Week 14 - Theoretical & Practice
Zero Waste Applications and Sustainability Projects. Successful zero-waste practices, sustainability projects, and industrial case studies are examined. Concepts learned throughout the course are evaluated through real-world applications.
