Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to provide knowledge about the economic, medicinal, and cultural uses of plants; to explore the interactions between humans and plants from both cultural and scientific perspectives; and to emphasize the importance of biological diversity within the context of traditional knowledge systems.

Course Content

Definition, history, and research methods of ethnobotany; traditional plant use; folk medicine practices; medicinal and aromatic plants; ethnobotanical aspects of food, dye, textile, and ornamental plants; sacred plants and rituals; biocultural diversity; conservation of local knowledge systems and ethical considerations; examples from Turkey and introduction to field-based ethnobotanical studies.

Learning Outcomes
1.Defines what ethnobotany is, explains its importance, and identifies related scientific disciplines.
2.Explains the traditional, medicinal, and cultural uses of plants with examples.
3.Recognizes ethnobotanical research methods and applies them at a basic level.
4.Presents examples of ethnobotanical practices in Turkey and demonstrates awareness of the importance of preserving traditional knowledge systems.
5.Describes important plants such as tea, coffee and fabacian plants.
