Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is for students to acquire the fundamental knowledge and skills related to patient care in intensive care units; to comprehend the processes of systematically assessing and monitoring critically ill patients and identifying their care needs; and to develop appropriate care approaches for the physiological, psychosocial, and ethical situations encountered in intensive care.

Course Content

This course covers the assessment of the critically ill patient within the framework of intensive care concepts and levels of care, the physical characteristics of intensive care units, ethical processes, and scoring systems. Topics addressed include patient monitoring in the intensive care setting, care of the intubated patient, nutritional support, infection control, and patient safety. Additionally, physiological issues, delirium, and psychosocial conditions observed in intensive care patients, as well as communication processes with patients and their families, are examined through a holistic approach.

1.Explains the structure and functioning of the intensive care unit and the steps of patient care.
2.Systematically evaluates the critically ill patient using scoring systems and monitoring methods.
3.Explains patient observation, monitoring, and basic care practices (intubation, nutrition, infection control, etc.) in the intensive care setting and integrates them into the care process.
4.Analyzes the physiological and psychosocial problems that develop in intensive care patients and determines appropriate care approaches.
5.It evaluates patient safety, ethical principles, and patient-relative communication within a holistic care approach.
