Objectives of the Course

The objective of this course is to introduce students to the quarantine systems implemented to protect plant health during the national and international movement of agricultural products, the harmful organisms subject to quarantine, and laboratory examination processes. The course will cover domestic and international quarantine practices, plant health regulations, sampling methods, laboratory analysis processes, and the scientific basis for quarantine decisions.

Course Content

Basic concepts and importance of agricultural quarantine; domestic and international quarantine practices; plant health regulations; diseases, pests, and weeds subject to quarantine; plant health inspections in imports and exports; quarantine procedures carried out at ports, airports, and border crossings; sampling methods; sample acceptance procedures at laboratories; diagnosis of pests and disease-causing agents; laboratory safety; quarantine decision-making processes; quarantine cases that have occurred in our country and around the world.

1.Explains the basic objectives and principles of agricultural quarantine and compares internal and external quarantine practices.
2.Explains the concepts of plant health and biosecurity; assesses the importance of quarantine-regulated diseases, pests, and weeds.
3.Explains the phytosanitary controls applied during import and export processes; describes the procedures for collecting samples for quarantine purposes and sending them to a laboratory.
4.Explains the basic diagnostic methods used in quarantine laboratories; explains the principles of laboratory safety and quality management.
5.Interprets the scientific and technical basis for quarantine decisions; assesses the importance of quarantine measures in agricultural production and trade.
