Objectives of the Course

The objective of this course is to provide students with basic knowledge and skills regarding the collection, recording, transport, preservation, and conversion of biological specimens—particularly insects—into collection material during fieldwork, in accordance with scientific methods. The course will cover sampling methods, sampling equipment, sampling planning, and various preservation techniques.

Course Content

The concept and importance of field sampling; sampling planning; insect sampling methods; active and passive sampling techniques; the use of traps, aspirators, Japanese umbrellas, light traps, color traps, and other sampling tools; labeling and recording of specimens; transporting specimens from the field to the laboratory; methods for creating dry and wet collections; long-term storage of specimens; organization and preservation of entomological collections.
