Objectives of the Course

To enable students participating from different departments to comprehend the concept of play, the dynamics of educational games, and the cultural foundations of traditional children's games. Within the scope of this course, it is aimed for students to learn the principles of educational game design; to prepare a written project/assignment report containing the objective, rules, target audience, and materials of an original educational/traditional game; and to acquire the skills to convey this designed game to their peers in a classroom environment through theoretical and practical presentation techniques.

Course Content

Definition, philosophy, and socio-cultural function of play; the concept, characteristics, and classification of educational games; historical development of traditional children's games; principles of educational game planning and design; dynamics of leadership, refereeing, and group management in game environments; educational game models that develop cognitive, physical, and social skills; safety, risk management, and quality standards in play; written reporting processes of educational/traditional game projects designed by students (analysis of objective, rule, material, and target audience), and the analysis of these games through in-class presentation, implementation, and peer evaluation methods.

1.Explains the theoretical and cultural foundations of the concepts of play, educational games, and traditional games.
2.Knows, at a theoretical level, the methods for designing educational games, structuring rules, and adapting them for different age groups, environments, and purposes.
3.Reports the objective, rules, target audience, and materials of an original or compiled game in a written assignment format in accordance with academic standards.
4.Conveys the designed or compiled game theoretically and practically to peers during in-class implementation processes by utilizing group dynamics and presentation techniques.
5.Acts in accordance with occupational health and safety rules, alongside scientific and professional ethical values during the stages of planning, written reporting, and presenting game activities.

Introduction and Basic Concepts: Theoretical framework of the definition, meaning, philosophy, and socio-cultural function of play in human life.
Week 2 - Theoretical & Practice
Educational Game Theory: Definition, purpose, and characteristics of educational games, their differences from general games, and classifications of educational games.
Week 3 - Theoretical & Practice
Historical Development of Traditional Games: Cultural origins of traditional children's games, play heritage in Turkish culture, and its sociological dimension.
Week 4 - Theoretical & Practice
Principles of Educational Game Design: Structuring an educational game, determining rules, target audience analysis, and the balance between purpose and objective.
Week 5 - Theoretical & Practice
Leadership and Management in Play: The role of the game leader (teacher/referee/administrator), managing group dynamics, and motivation strategies.
Week 6 - Theoretical & Practice
Space, Material, and Safety Analysis: Characteristics of indoor/outdoor games, material selection, occupational health, physical safety measures, and risk management.
Week 7 - Theoretical & Practice
Games Supporting Physical and Cognitive Development: Theoretical design of educational games focused on coordination, balance, speed, strategy, attention, and problem-solving.

MIDTERM EXAM & Team Games Supporting Social-Emotional Development: Analysis of group games that cultivate skills of cooperation, mutual aid, empathy, and adherence to rules.

Modernization of Traditional Games: Theoretical adaptation methods of vanishing traditional games into contemporary educational environments.
Week 10 - Theoretical & Practice
Criteria for Preparing Game Projects: Written reporting steps of the assignment to be prepared by students (Objective, Rules, Materials, Target Audience) and presentation techniques.
Week 11 - Theoretical & Practice
Digitalization and the Transformation of Play: The status of traditional games against digitalization and information technologies; the evolution of play from the street to the screen.
Week 12 - Theoretical & Practice
Quality and Evaluation in Game Activities: Institutional-level planning of game festivals and tournaments, process evaluation, and quality processes.
Week 13 - Theoretical & Practice
Student Project Presentations and Implementations I: Submission of written assignment reports, theoretical presentation, and in-class practical delivery of games prepared by students.
