Objectives of the Course

In this course, the basic concepts, arguments and problems of philosophy of art and philosophical aesthetics will be discussed.

Course Content

Sanat felsefesi, felsefi estetik, sanat kuramı, sanat eleştirisi ve sanat tarihi disiplinleri arasındaki çok boyutlu ve dinamik ilişki. Alanın önde gelen filozoflarının düşünceleri ve çalışmaları.

Learning Outcomes

1.	To be able to participate in the basic debates of the philosophy of art.
2.	To be able to engage in the basic debates of philosophical aesthetics.
3.	To have insight into the multidimensional and dynamic relationships between philosophy of art, philosophical aesthetics, art history, art theory, art criticism and various disciplines that center on the empirical study of art and aesthetics.
4.	To engage with the philosophical thought of leading philosophers of philosophy of art and philosophical aesthetics through a detailed study of their texts.
5.	To enhance the ability to understand, evaluate and discuss philosophical texts.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents

Week 1 - Theoretical

Introduction to the problematics of the course.

Week 2 - Theoretical

Discussion of the possibility, limits and autonomy of aesthetic experience. Critical analysis and evaluation of the concepts of aesthetic subject, object, attitude/distance, pleasure, experience, taste, judgment, idea and value.

Week 3 - Theoretical

A discussion on the origin or antecedents of art: magic, myth, religion, collective labor, play. A discussion on the ontological structural elements of art: Pathos, tekhne, mimesis, poiesis.

Week 4 - Theoretical

Tracing the “fine arts” notion from antiquity to the present day in the context of the art/craft distinction.

Week 5 - Theoretical

Classification of arts from antiquity to the present.

Week 6 - Theoretical

Discussion of the nature of art: imitation/mirroring, expression, creation, revelation.

Week 7 - Theoretical

General review.

Week 8 - Theoretical

Plato, Aristotle and Plotinus' philosophical views on art and beauty.

Week 9 - Theoretical

Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque art and beauty concepts.

Week 10 - Theoretical

Modern rationalist and empiricist theories of aesthetics.

Week 11 - Theoretical

Kant and Critique of the Power of Judgment.

Week 12 - Theoretical

Schelling and Hegel's philosophical views on art and beauty.

Week 13 - Theoretical

Schiller, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche's philosophical views on art and beauty.

Week 14 - Theoretical

Selections from contemporary philosophers.
