Objectives of the Course

To address theoretical and conceptual perspectives on the concept of security in the discipline of International Relations.

Course Content

Different perspectives on the concept of security will be explained using concrete examples. The concepts of war, peace and strategy will be analyzed. Within the scope of the traditional understanding of security, realist, neorealist, liberal and neo-liberal institutionalist perspectives on security will be explained. Apart from this, the relationship between the globalization process and security will be discussed. Finally, new and/or critical perspectives on security such as the Copenhagen School, Paris School, Wales School, Third World Security Studies, Feminist Security Studies and Human Security will be analyzed.

1.To be able to comprehend the definition of security concept and its historical development
2.To be able to learn different perspectives on the security concept
3.To be able to gather knowledge on the theoretical discussions related to security issues.
4.To be able to analyse in a structurally-analyzing manner the functions of securitization processes that are irrelevant to security.
5.To be able to write a brief paper on a topic related to an international security problem through using the theoretical background, provided during the course.
