The primary objective of this course is to analyze the dynamic and reciprocal interaction between international politics and the global economy. Within the scope of this course, the historical transformation of international political economy, its core theoretical perspectives (Mercantilism, Liberalism, Marxism/Critical Theories), and the governance of global production, trade, finance, and development will be examined. The course aims to enable students to structurally evaluate the economic dimensions of global power rivalry, international financial crises, and the inequalities brought about by globalization.
The International Political Economy course addresses the functioning of the global system at the intersection of politics and economics. Throughout the semester, core theories of IPE, the establishment and collapse of the Bretton Woods system, and the roles of institutions such as the IMF, World Bank, and World Trade Organization will be examined. Furthermore, globalization, global value chains, international financial crises, multinational corporations, trade wars, energy geopolitics, and the development problems of the Global South will be analyzed in conjunction with contemporary debates.
