The primary objective of this course is to examine the asymmetric political, economic, and cultural relations between developed industrial nations (the North) and developing or under-developed nations (the South) through a historical and theoretical perspective. Within the scope of this course, the post-colonial construction of the global system, dependency relations, and inequalities in the distribution of global wealth and power will be addressed. The course aims to enable students to critically analyze structural problems in global governance mechanisms, foreign aid, migration movements, and emerging alternative blocs.

The North-South Relations course covers the structure of the global system, reflecting a political and economic cleavage rather than a mere geographical division. Throughout the semester, mercantilism and the history of colonialism, the birth of the Third World concept, the Non-Aligned Movement, and the search for a New International Economic Order (NIEO) will be examined. Furthermore, neocolonialism, debt crises, asymmetries in global trade regimes, climate injustice, refugee crises, and the new dynamics created by the institutionalization of the Global South (BRICS+, SCO, etc.) against global hegemony will be analyzed through contemporary case studies.
