Objectives of the Course

The primary objective of this course is to introduce students to the chemical and physical characteristics of agricultural and agro-industrial feed ingredients, providing them with the vision to integrate these resources into rational animal production processes. The curriculum aims to critically evaluate the nutrient compositions of conventional forages and concentrates, as well as alternative feedstuffs. Additionally, it covers preservation technologies such as haymaking and ensiling, along with the characteristics of compound feeds, to teach the core principles of rational feed utilization in livestock production.

1.Defines and classifies feed ingredients used in farm animal nutrition based on their morphological, physical, and nutritional characteristics according to international standards
2.Distinguishes between conventional forages, concentrates, compound feeds, and alternative co-products, and learns their production processes
3.To be able to recognize the nutritive and feeding value of forage
4.Evaluates the nutrient values, feeding values, and digestive system kinetics of feeds
5.Defines haymaking, ensiling, and industrial feed processing technologies (grinding, pelleting, etc.)

The concept of feed and the significance of feedstuffs in animal feeding
Week 2 - Theoretical & Practice
Feed evaluation systems used in the determination of nutrient values of feeds and their significance
Week 3 - Theoretical
Significance of nutrient value, feeding value, and digestibility concepts; differences in the physical/chemical structures of forages and concentrates on digestive kinetics, cost, and animal performance
Week 4 - Theoretical & Practice
Classification of feeds based on their morphological, physical, and nutritional characteristics considering international standards
Week 5 - Theoretical & Practice
Overview of forages: Definition of forages, factors influencing forage quality, and their functional roles in ruminant nutrition
Week 6 - Theoretical & Practice
Nutritional values and characteristic properties of pasture-meadows, grass, and legume forage resources
Week 7 - Theoretical & Practice
Other forage types, crop residues (straw, etc.), tree leaves, and agro-industrial co-products (pulps, etc.)

Preservation of forages: Haymaking technologies, principles of ensiling, and silage fermentation

Overview of concentrates: Definition of concentrates, their classification, and fundamental functions in rations

Concentrate resources: Starch/protein compositions and functional properties of cereal grains and grain legumes

Feed technology: Physical, chemical, and industrial processing methods applied to feeds (grinding, pelleting, flaking, etc.)
