Objectives of the Course

The primary objective of this course is to provide students with an advanced understanding and appreciation of current topics in molecular genetics. Recent advances and ethical considerations in molecular genetics research will be emphasized.

Course Content

Molecular Genetics covers the fundamental principles underlying the structure, organization, and function of genetic information at the molecular level. The course introduces the basic concepts of molecular genetics and examines the structural characteristics of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. The structure of nucleic acids and the organization of genetic material are discussed in detail. Mutation concepts, types of mutations, and important mutation examples observed in farm animals are evaluated. The course also focuses on the molecular mechanisms responsible for the transmission of genetic information, including DNA replication, transcription, and translation. In addition, gene expression control and gene regulation mechanisms are examined. In the final part of the course, commonly used molecular genetic techniques and their applications are introduced, followed by an overall evaluation of the subject. The course aims to provide students with the theoretical foundation necessary to understand and apply molecular genetics in animal science and biotechnology.
