Objectives of the Course

The fundamental principles of herd management in cattle farming include record keeping, animal identification, breeding, feeding, health and welfare management, monitoring and evaluation of herd performance, herd renewal strategies, and the use of modern herd management technologies.

Course Content

This course provides theoretical and practical knowledge on fundamental principles of herd management in cattle farming, herd record systems, animal identification and tracking methods, herd health management, reproductive management, calf and young animal management, lactation management in dairy herds, feeding management, herd performance evaluation, herd renewal strategies, animal welfare practices, biosecurity measures, digital technologies in herd management, and decision support systems, herd projection

Learning Outcomes
1.To be able to plan a cattle farm in detail and organize farm land by considering the forage requirements of the animals.
2.To be able to explain the importance of records kept in cattle herds and utilize and evaluate these records.
3.To be able to explain and evaluate the principles and practices of raising, care, and management of newborn calves and replacement heifers.
4.To be able to explain fertility management in cattle herds and evaluate important reproductive performance indicators.
5.To be able to develop herd projections, estimate future production levels and feed requirements, perform income-expense analyses, and evaluate the results.
