Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to familiarize undergraduate students with the fundamental principles of identification, conservation, and utilization of farm animal genetic resources, and to raise awareness about the status of farm animal genetic resources at national and global levels.

Course Content

The course covers the aspect of characterization, conservation and sustainable use of farm animal genetic resources. The main topics that will be given are global, regional and national status of farm animal genetic resources, characterization of animal populations, reasons for loss of diversity within and between breeds, categorising risk status, objectives for conservation, conservation strategies and methods (in situ and ex situ), monitoring and evaluation systems, the role of different organizations in conservation.
