The objective of this course is to introduce the historical development and institutional significance of media literacy education, both globally and in Turkey. It aims to provide communication students with the theoretical and methodological foundation of media literacy, while fostering a critical perspective to analyze, deconstruct, and evaluate media texts and communication practices.
This course explores the conceptual framework of media literacy, its global and national historical evolution, and its institutionalization within educational curricula. Examining the fundamental methods and approaches of media literacy, it dissects the production codes of mass media contents. Furthermore, the course aims to foster students' critical decoding skills toward printed, audio, visual, and digital media texts, while questioning the social, cultural, and political impacts of media through an academic perspective.
